Approximately 50% of people with bipolar disorder struggle with medication adherence due to side effects and the focus on symptom management over holistic care. In this insightful webinar, Dr. James Greenblatt will present integrative approaches to improve compliance and enhance long-term outcomes. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of lithium in both nutritional and pharmaceutical doses, along with guidance on selecting the appropriate type for individual patient needs. Additionally, Dr. Greenblatt will share effective strategies to prevent relapse, empowering clinicians to expand their treatment toolkit for sustainable patient success.

Overview

Bipolar disorder presents significant challenges for clinicians, often relying solely on medication-based treatments that can lead to unwanted side effects. Characterized by cyclic extremes of mood and behavior, bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most challenging mental illnesses for mental health clinicians to identify and treat. Add to thtat, the reigning treatment protocols for BD often start and end with medication. While the necessity of medications in BD is undeniable, mainstream psychiatry often casts a blind eye to the consequences of pharmaceutical therapy.

Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics are well-established to create side effects, which may range from bothersome to debilitating. Likewise, medication side effects are known to impact patient compliance. For example, some BD patients may choose to forgo medication rather than experience the (e.g.) headaches, weight gain, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, agitation, and/or suicidality resulting from their medications.

How can we expect patients already grappling with Bipolar Disorder to bear the additional challenges of insomnia, weight gain, and other common medication side effects as part of their treatment? It appears inconceivable, yet millions of patients and their healthcare providers confront this dilemma daily.
