Overview

Depression is an epidemic in the United States. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, around 8% of the adult population was struggling with depression (NIMH 2021). By 2020, during the pandemic, rates more than tripled, up to a staggering 27.8%. And through 2021, depression rates continued to worsen, climbing to 32.8% or one in three adults (Ettman 2021).

Modern psychiatry’s current treatment approach—symptomatic-based polypharmacy—is not working.  We desperately need to step beyond symptomatic treatment using medications alone. We can do better.

Identifying and assessing the biologic abnormalities—nutritional, genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors—that underlie the diagnosis of depression in numerous patients is the key to real recovery.

In this webinar, Dr. Greenblatt will discuss a functional medicine treatment approach to anxiety and depression, along with the broader polypharmaceutical crisis as it pertains to this clinical diagnosis. In particular, he will review biochemical individuality and key biomarkers of “depressogenic” processes, including genetics, inflammation, and dysbiosis.  He will describe interventions to rebalance nutritional abnormalities and offer best practices in the assessment and treatment of depression.
