PANS: Infection, Autoimmunity & Mental Illness
Learn about the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, laboratory evaluation, and treatment protocols for kids with PANS in this course by Dr. Dan Kinderlehrer.
In 1994, Susan Swedo at the NIMH first described children who developed mental health issues following a Streptococcal infection, and coined the term PANDAS—Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disease Associated with Streptococcal Disease. Since then it has become clear that multiple microbes can trigger this syndrome, and the name has been updated to PANS—Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome.
This course describes the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, laboratory evaluation, and treatment protocols for patients with PANS. It will also detail clinical studies performed by Dr. Kinderlehrer that suggest this is a widespread problem.
