Course Overview

This 7-module course elucidates a comprehensive functional medicine approach to the treatment of substance use disorders, targeting reward-pathway dysregulation and the many nutritional deficiencies associated with addiction that can alter brain function. Integrating mainstream approaches such as MAT and psychotherapy with evidence-based functional approaches such as nutrient therapy, acupuncture, and mindfulness, this course provides clinicians with a roadmap for navigating addiction disorders and bringing patients into balance.

Faculty List

Arwen Podesta, MD, ABPN, FASAM, ABIHM

Practicing in New Orleans, Arwen Podesta, MD is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with sub-specializations in addiction medicine, forensic psychiatry, and integrative medicine. She opened Podesta Psychiatry LLC in 2012, with a team of excellent providers- a multidisciplinary collaborative model with nutrition, psychotherapy, acupuncture and psychiatry. Dr. Podesta’s primary focus is access to integrative mental health and addiction treatment, with a whole health focus, for all. Her current activities include teaching (Tulane and LSU), consulting in Re-entry court, board member of the Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices (www.benzoreform.org), and recently re-releasing her book, HOOKED, for an updated edition. She is the immediate past president of the Louisiana chapter of the American society for addiction medicine (ASAM) and currently serves in national committees. She consults to the Louisiana governor’s HOPE committee, and often advises for the city and state regarding addiction, best practices and more. She is a distinguished fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and also the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Podesta regularly travels to teach and speak on the topics of Addiction Medicine and Integrative Psychiatry.

James Greenblatt, MD

Founder, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. James Greenblatt is a globally recognized pioneer in functional and integrative psychiatry with over 30 years of clinical experience. He has dedicated his career to transforming the treatment of mental health disorders through precision-based approaches that integrate laboratory testing, nutritional interventions, and root-cause analysis. Dr. Greenblatt earned his medical degree and completed a psychiatry residency at George Washington University, and pursued a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medical School. A prolific author, Dr. Greenblatt has written eight books, including the bestseller Finally Focused: The Breakthrough Natural Treatment Plan for ADHD. He serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine. Previously, he served as Chief Medical Officer for Walden Behavioral Care/Monte Nido, a national mental health organization specializing in eating disorders. In 2019, Dr. Greenblatt founded Psychiatry Redefined, a leading platform for continuing education for clinicians in functional and integrative psychiatry, designed to bridge critical knowledge gaps for mental health professionals. His innovative work combines evidence-based research with decades of clinical expertise in functional and integrative psychiatry to promote personalized, precision medicine approaches for sustainable mental health outcomes. in 2024, Dr. Greenblatt founded Mind Refined, a consumer education platform in functional and integrative approaches to mental healthcare. Dr. Greenblatt lectures internationally on nutritional psychiatry and functional medicine’s transformative role in treating mental illnesses.
