OVERVIEW: This course provides an overview of the research on antidepressant withdrawal and some of the controversies around the challenges with deprescribing antidepressant medications. Practical strategies for identifying and treating nutritional deficits that contribute to withdrawal symptoms will also be addressed.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Module 1
• Summarize the physiology of antidepressant withdrawal and the potential scope of the problem.
Module 2
• Describe the relationship between amino acids, neurotransmitters and mental health
• Illustrate the necessity of adequate protein digestion and zinc supplementation for supporting neurotransmitter synthesis
Module 3
• Summarize the effects of vitamin D, vitamin B12 and folate on mental health
• Analyze the damaging effects of homocysteine in the body and its relationship to vitamin B12 and folate
Module 4
• Describe the balance between copper and zinc and their potential effects on mental health
• Evaluate the relationship between magnesium and mental health
• Analyze the effects, benefits and use of low-dose lithium

• Implement the individualized approach to deprescribing antidepressants
