Dr. Kailas is a woman of South Indian decent who expressed her desire to become a physician of children at age five. Supported into her dreams from that young age, she has devoted her life to the scientific exploration of the world around her. With a penchant for headstands at age seven, Dr. Kailas spent her early years in Gallup, New Mexico, soaking up the traditions of the Diné Nation alongside the Vedic wisdom of her transplanted ancestral heritage. As her reading advanced in the pre-internet era, Dr. Kailas devoured everything she could get her hands on, including the nutritional facts and ingredient lists on her cereal boxes. Her observation of food marketing, packages, and labels from childhood is one of the many ways Dr. Kailas began her journey as a young scientist, questioning these observations through taste tests with family and friends.
As small food and cosmetic companies folded into large corporate conglomerates, Dr. Kailas observed the psychic confusion imparted onto a society seduced by the colors and shapes of low-fat, sugar-free marketing, ever expanding through the reach of social media, all the while yearning for true health and wholeness in the technologically advancing world around her. The deep search for clarity led her into the heart of the rich cultural traditions of New Orleans, where she experienced, through music, movement, food, and friendship, the vivid intertwining of body, mind, and spirit.
Dr. Kailas was just beginning her clinicial rotations in Child Psychiatry when Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Faith and curiosity persisted, and through grace bestowed by the extraordinary tragedy, Dr. Kailas began to recognize that nourishment of spirit expresses as stability in mind and vitality in health. In the months and years following the storm, Dr. Kailas awakened to the healing gifts that reside within her ancestral lineage. She has since devoted her life to the reintegration of humanity and spirituality in medicine, singing each new day into being with the songs of the birds that surround her. Jai Sri Mata.
