Course Description

Adaptogens in Psychiatry Adaptogens are natural plant materials with numerous compounds that can encourage the body’s physiology to adapt to its circumstances to promote survival, especially under conditions of stress. Adaptogens do this encouraging the body’s natural defense systems at both the organism, extracellular and intracellular levels. Among numerous mechanisms that will be discussed, these plant compounds modulate the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) during sustained and consistent stress. In these two classes, Dr. Peter Bongiorno will review the basics of adaptogens: what these are, and how they function in the body. After a brief history of adaptogen use through the ages, he will review their effect on the HPA axis and how adaptogens act as key mediators of stress responses, including the ability to modify gene expression to prevent and treat stress-related disorders. He will review how clinical presentation and lab testing can help you prescribe adaptogens for individual patient needs. Finally, he will review the literature regarding the ten most used plant adaptogens (the ginsengs, maca, Rhodiola and more) and discuss the benefit of using these concomitantly with psychiatric medications. You will leave this class with a bench to beside knowledge of how to use adaptogens in your practice to complement conventional care, as how to address healing the underlying causes of psychiatric illness with these plant medicines. Also, Peter will straighten out the differences among the three ginsengs (American, Asian, and Siberian) so you can use them confidently.
